One Rat Short (film)

Created by Charlex in New York, I did work intermittently during the early phases of development, including develoment of the fur pipeline, which was my first real opportunity to teach myself MEL, Maya's built-in scripting language. I also worked with Todd Winters and his great storyboard work to develop the specific look direction of the piece.

Later during full production I was responsible for both technical and aesthetic supervision of lighting and rendering, which included MEL scripting, mental ray troubleshooting, the large majority of shader development for the film and compositing oversight.

One Rat Short was rendered entirely with Maya 7.0 and mental ray standalone. The fur was created with Maya Fur and rendered in mental ray using third party shaders and custom in-house phenomena. The ray tracing engine was used and shadows were 100% raytraced, including fur shadows. Motion blur was applied as a post effect using ReelSmart Motion Blur shaders for mental ray in Digital Fusion 5.0.
